Prior to Christianity being introduced, the Norsemen had a ritual known as the vatni aura. Like the Christian baptism, this ritual involved sprinkling newborn infants with water. It is thought there may also have been some holy attribute to the water as well.

British wells

There are two wells, one in Gloucestershire and one in Yorkshire that were originally known as Woden’s well and Thor’s Well. Dedicated by the pagans, they were then rededicated to St. Margaret and St. Helena by the Christians. Until recent times, people would visit these wells every Sunday evening and drink sugar water made from the water.

Prophetic wells

The Palici springs in Sicily were known as prophetic wells. Originally, the deep pools would become agitated by volcanic springs. The springs themselves were considered to be gods that watched over oaths, and the most solemn oaths were taken in their presence, and those who lied were blinded.

Wells in Britain were also used for divination. There were numerous wells throughout the country that would be sought out by a person who was having difficulty with an issue. The person would throw a small object into the water, and by watching the bubbles, would have an answer to the problem. Vases and coins have also been found near the sites of old rivers and streams and are presumed to be the remains of offerings to the water gods.

Druids

Water into wine

The Germans collected spring water on Christmas night as the clock struck midnight was called heilwag, and was thought to be good for belly pain. This could have a link back to Jesus’ first miracle of turning water into wine at the wedding feast in Cana. My blooms are smaller, leaves are showing signs of wear and tear and yet the rose gardening I do now will be crucial to the success of next years growth. Lets call it rose gardening insurance.

The last rose show is over, the days start getting shorter and the children are back in school but as rose growers we still have work to do—the four most important tasks of fall.

PICK AND CLEAN

Stop fertilizing and start your clean up. From the beginning of September on, there is no need to fertilize your rose beds and pots because you do not want to encourage new shoots to develop as winter approaches. This is also the period of the highest incidence of mildew problems such as black-spot so it is time to pull away all leaves that show signs of disease and to rake the beds below to remove all traces of the black-spot or mildew spores. Yes, they overwinter so get rid of them with your garbage. Deadhead, keep the beds scrupulously clean and pick away at the damaged leaves.

RE-CONSIDER YOUR SPRAY PROGRAM

Continue spraying if you want clean leaves and blooms into early fall but put away your spray equipment as your rose bushes begin to go into dormancy. Leaves are beginning to curl and drop, rose hips grow darker in color and no new shoots are developing. These are the signs that your rose bush is slowly moving into the dormant stage and the the “do not disturb ’till spring” signs are about to go up.

If you want to spray with dormancy spray, usually oil and sulfur, wait until December or January when your bushes are fully asleep, otherwise store your spray in a dry, safe place and take a close look at how successful you were this season and whether you could cut down or at least be more aware of the environment. Did your plan work?

PRUNING RE-VISITED

You should have pruned your old growth roses or any that only bloom but once a year. Your climbers should be pruned to shape now and tied in to train them to grow in the right direction and shape for next season.

All other rose bushes are simply cut back to about waist high to stop the wind from causing them to whip around and break off, or worse still, loosen the crown of the bush.

Miniatures can be cleaned of wayward shoots or broken stems and given a short haircut.

Leave the serious pruning until spring, just be prepared for the winter storms.

PLANT OR RE-PLANT FOR THE NEW YEAR

Now is the time to plant your bare root roses in preparation for spring growth. It is also a very good time to move roses and to re-plant them.

Always plant with good, new soil with compost or manure added, but do not add nitrogen based fertilizers at this time of year. A cup of bone meal would help with root growth.

Bare root roses should be soaked in warm water for eight hours before planting to re-constitute them immediately following delivery to your home.

Don’t forget to mound up all your rose bushes with soil to protect the crown from winter winds and the possibility of drying out. This protective mound will be slowly removed as the air temperatures warm up in the spring.

As you go into winter and your rose bushes go dormant remember that any rose gardening actions taken now will have a great effect on what happens in the spring.

Even in the Pacific North-West I have had the occasional rose bloom at Christmas and if you do it should be in a clean rose bed on a bush pruned and mounded up for winter protection.

Call me old school but I still swear by the stuff and think the only thing better invented kind of by nature for flower beds was the composted mushroom soil I was able to get back east. It was the soil used inside of giant caves to grow mushrooms in man made containers and it worked miracles.

Anyhow so after puttering around outside, playing on the lawn and obsessing how to best mow a diamond pattern into it. An obsession I still don’t quite have nailed but my friend Dee’s husband John turns his little yard in Westchester into patterns and textures that the Yankees would covet.

So then on to more productive work, Moving all the garden statues out of the beds. Putting down fresh mulch, cutting away the now brown tulips and daffodils from the early spring bloom and then back to washing and scrubbing the assorted landscaping stones (why do stones need washed anyway? No one washes with anything but rain when they’re out in the woods.) and wiping down the garden statues to ensure they’re clean as well before putting them back into place.

Right about the time I got done putting the heaviest of the garden statues back my little 9 year old gardening buddy came out to join me. She’s the one that no matter how filthy I am will go out and buy flowers with me as long as we can plant them when we get home.

On this particular spring day it was time to start the veggies. Truthfully I’d been growing lettuce in a basement window for a month or two had enough basil going to keep an Italian restaurant well stocked for the coming year and the tomato seeds were nice hearty little plants.

Into the car we go filthy shoes and all. Give one last fleeting look to the new mulch the clean garden statues and the not so ball park perfect front lawn as we pull away to begin our adventure at the Nursery. It began with us walking though the front door and a rack of seeds. Of course she stopped they picture of flowers and veggies on them as seed packets tend to do and I can’t help but imagine she was filling out gardens with all those wonderful flowers from the cover.

“Can we get some?” she asked

“Of course pick what ever you want but we need to figure out where they’ll go” I encourage her.

She finds a pack of sunflower seeds for 10 cents. I ask where they should go knowing darn well that I didn’t pave space for sunflowers but still keeping an open mind.

“In the herb garden on the top” her reply making it seem like it was so obvious and I should have known. As I questioned why would I put a flower in my herb garden. “Because you eat seeds they’re food” said nicely but I knew she knew she had me. Just for good measure she offered “besides they’re tall and bushy and will help make shade so everything doesn’t dry out. S we go home plant the seeds in the top level of our square little 4′x4′ herb garden. I built up two levels above ground level to kind of hold the soil ans separate the plants into neat little segments with out placing them in pots. Although the point needs to be made that the lemon thyme has a mind of it’s own and has not respected the boundaries.

In the pack there was 6 seeds we planted three of them in the little 8 inch square at the top. All three sprouted and we let two grow to maturity after a lengthy debate about over crowding.

So summer rolls around, the lawn is still a lush green and it’s keep needs to go to remedial decorative grass cutting school. The Garden statues had been sprayed off a few more times and the rocks were left to let nature clean them.

Her use the sunflowers to make shade for the other plants theory worked out quite well and it was time to cut the Sun Flowers off their tall green leafy plants and harvest the seeds. It’s a sunny warm September Saturday afternoon. We get a big pair of wire snips to lop off the flowers and bring them to the back porch.

Making a mess as if often the case of a work in process that I’m involved in My daughter and I have seeds every where. We start talking about the uses for them. Deciding that after they sit and dry out for a few days we’d bag them up. Her fourth grade teacher and the other students maintain a garden in the center of the school and feed the birds in the winter. She’s a very generous little girl and decides to give most of the seeds to her teacher to feed the birds. It was a great idea. Then she decides to mail a snack sized baggies to both of her grandmothers to plant in their gardens. Some of the overage could be used to feed the birds in my estimation.

It’s amazing how many seeds two sunflowers can produce after sending another quart baggie of seed in for a school hurricane relief project we still have a good three pounds of seeds left. I’d keep an eye out for fat birds around my house this winter.
